Indianapolis Colts Stadium (Lucas Oil Stadium)

Lucas Oil Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It replaced the RCA Dome as the home field of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and opened on August 16, 2008.

Lucas Oil Stadium Project Details:

The 15,000 ton Indianapolis Colts Stadium consists of two major portal frames that span 750 feet and transverse trusses. The stadium features a retractable roof and a large retractable window on one end, thus allowing games to be played both indoors and outdoors. This project contained 20,000 shop detail drawings and 500,000 bolts.

Lucas Oil Stadium Project Highlights & Challenges:

The 3D model was used extensively to monitor the geometry throughout the steelwork erection with geometry exported from the model into the surveying equipment ensure correct fit up alignment. This ensured the portal frame, built from each end, met successfully in the middle of the 750 feet span. Working with Hillsdale Fabricators, DBM Vircon’s thorough QA/QC process resulted in zero shop or field issues related to the steel on the project. DBM Vircon was also asked to model concrete and pre-cast walls, as well as ducting and mechanical components to check the interface with the structure.
