Indiana Department of Transportation I-69 Bridge

CLIENT: Stupp Bridge
LOCATION: Indiana, USA
COMPLETION DATE: 2024
project overview:

The Indiana Department of Transportation I-69 bridge underwent a significant remodel to improve safety and traffic flow on I-465 and I-69 where they connect on the northeast side of Indianapolis. This project aims to improve safety and traffic flow by building high-speed, high-capacity ramps that reduce weaving and merging.

DBM Vircon’s Scope of Work:

DBM Vircon’s scope of work consisted of creating a detailed 3D model of the bridge structure. This structure is a 700+ foot long, 1100-ton steel superstructure featuring eight-foot-tall, horizontally curved weathering steel plate girders. DBM Vircon’s modeling encompassed all essential components to ensure the bridge’s structural integrity and functionality. Project tasks included:

  • Project Planning and Management:
    • Initial project planning and scheduling
    • Resource allocation and management
    • Continuous project monitoring and reporting
  •  Structural Analysis and Calculations
  • Review and Approval of Design Documents
  • 3D Modeling:
    • Diaphragms: Modeled for precise placement and alignment within the bridge structure.
    • High-Strength Bolts: Secures structural connections.
    • Cross Frames: Connects and stabilizes bridge girders laterally, with modeling of connections and welding points.
    • Stiffeners: Reinforces beams and girders, enhancing their load-bearing capacity.
    • Splices: Ensures structural integrity and alignment where girder sections connect.
    • Drip Bars: Modeled to specifications using 3D modeling, preventing water ingress and corrosion.

By modeling these elements and adhering to design specifications, DBM Vircon delivered over 300 drawings for the project while staying on schedule. Our efficient teamwork and streamlined processes minimized the need for Requests for Information (RFIs), ensuring a smooth project flow.

Project Highlights & Challenges:

DBM Vircon delivered the project one week ahead of schedule and achieved an estimated 15% cost savings through efficient resource management and proactive problem-solving.
