A hyperscale data center campus in Social Circle, Georgia, was built as two data halls joined by a shared administration building. DBM Vircon modeled and detailed more than 7,500 tons of structural steel across the three structures, delivering the package over a 25-month program.
Data centers are among the most schedule-driven structures in commercial construction. Speed to market governs every decision, and the structural steel package sits on the critical path from the first shop drawing to the final bolted connection.
This project established the campus, pairing two identical data halls with a connecting administration building that carries shared services and staff amenities. The framing is deliberately repetitive at the hall level and highly bespoke at the interfaces, where the halls meet the administration building and where mechanical, electrical and plumbing services penetrate the roof and floor plates.
Working with Schuff Steel, DBM Vircon built a single coordinated model spanning all three structures, allowing the interface conditions to be resolved in the model rather than in the field. The volume of secondary steel supporting MEP services was substantial, and early coordination of penetrations and supports removed a common source of late-stage rework for the fabricator and the erection crews.
