Cyclone George Memorial Sculpture (Northern Spirits)

CLIENT: Fortescue Metals Group Ltd
LOCATION: South Hedland
COMPLETION DATE: 2007
project overview:

The Cyclone George Memorial Sculpture designed by acclaimed artist and sculptor Ron Gomboc was chosen to commemorate the lives tragically lost during the category 5 cyclone which hit FMG’s Cloud Break campsite on March 8th 2007.

 DBM Vircon’s Scope of Work:

DBM Vircon started with nothing more than a laser scan of Ron’s original 1 meter tall minuet. This scan was brought into DBM Vircon’s detailing software where it was scaled to 12 meters tall.

DBM Vircon suggested to the engineering team a central scribed pipework spine where intermittent baffle plates could then be welded.  This allowed the curving platework skin to contour true to Ron’s sculpture.  This central spine also proved to be what the engineers needed in giving the sculpture strength to withstand cyclonic conditions in South Hedland.

Cyclone George Memorial Sculpture Project Highlights & Challenges:
