Service Focus - Digital Engineering Transformation
The transition away from fossil fuels has significantly influenced the scale and complexity of capital works projects globally. Public and private organizations are undertaking substantial infrastructure developments to support renewable energy targets, as well as balance an increasing demand for energy usage with the AI market and its associated infrastructure.
To support this transition and also to manage these infrastructure developments efficiently, DBM Vircon has been engaged to define and lead the digital engineering programs for organizations globally.
We dub these engagements, digital engineering transformation.
We typically start these engagements with an intense discovery phase, running a number of cross disciplinary workshops and engaging with an array of people from various divisions within an organization. This helps us establish the status quo and also determine the direction for the future.
This current and future state assessment’s helps us to:
- Define what digital engineering is for an organization
- Determine the current state of the organizations existing procedures, systems and software to assist with the development of a digital roadmap to achieve the desired future vision
- Develop governing documents in line with relevant standards (e.g. ISO 19650) to define digital specifications and requirements for future works
- Facilitate an environment using available documentation and specifications capable of hosting 3D representations of facilities to create a single point of truth for capital works delivery
- Augment the current design, construction and operational procedures with the use of the 3D environment to make better decisions in undertaking and scheduling activities
- Integrate supplier’s data from the capital works delivery team for a fully centralised system and to assist handover to operations
After establishing a roadmap and planning the implementation of it, organizations are faced with a dilemma of supporting existing operations and projects or, focusing on their long term strategy and upcoming pipeline.
Navigating the decision on whether to focus on the next round of projects or what currently is in flight and with measured and effective change management, this is where the vision for digital engineering can first come to life. Quick wins can be established like defining a common data environment or creating a federated model.
3D Models and Assets Management - Maximo
The use of 3D models in asset management allow for better site context, ability to interact with data more efficiently, and improve collaboration. However, ensuring a model that is developed through engineering and construction is compatible with asset management systems requires focused attention. DBM Vircon has been through the challenges of conditioning models to make them efficient for asset management and from this can bring our knowledge to support clients in specifying information deliverables differently to avoid extensive manual handing at the project handover.
In partnership with Nextspace Ltd & COSOL, DBM Vircon has launched a new Digital Twin Model Viewer and Data Integrator plugin for IBM Maximo Application Suite (IBM MAS). Leveraging our real word BIM-to-Maximo use cases and industry need, alongside working partners COSOL (IBM MAS experts), this collaboration creates new “in Maximo” viewer functionality that removes the scale and complexity limitations of the existing IBM MAS plugin model viewers. This plugin provides an integration hub for many new types of spatial data (2D, 3D, GIS, Scan, and BIM sources), and other non-spatial and live (IoT) data, that until now has been difficult or impossible to achieve with existing plugin solutions. It also offers dynamic visual styling for rapid identification of performance and condition issues of assets in IBM MAS, and in fact any attribute required such as budgeting, phasing, staging, data and risk, plus many other status or performance type attributes.
